Supporting Your Learner Driver: A Guide for Parents

Updated: Oct 10

Let’s Start with the Legal Bits

Before you and your learner head out on the road together, here’s what the law says:

✅ You need to be at least 21 years old and have had your full driving licence for 3 years or more.

✅ The car must clearly display L-plates on the front and back (I’ve got these available if you need some!).

✅ Your learner must be properly insured. Either on your policy or with a provisional insurance policy.

Provisional insurance is often the easiest and most cost-effective way to cover a learner, and it doesn’t affect your no-claims bonus.

Private Practice: What It Is and Why It’s So Helpful

Driving lessons with an instructor are essential, but private practice with a parent or family member can make a huge difference in building confidence and experience.

Here’s how to make it work smoothly:

  • Plan your routes in advance (start quiet, then build up).

  • Stay relaxed — easier said than done sometimes, I know!

  • Chat with your learner’s instructor so you’re reinforcing the same skills.

  • Keep drives short and focused — 30 to 60 minutes is usually perfect.

  • Practise a bit of everything: roundabouts, parking, night driving, motorways (once they’re ready!).

And please remember — you’re not expected to teach. You’re just there to support, encourage, and help them apply what they’ve been taught in lessons.

Building Confidence on the Road

As your learner gains experience, their confidence will grow. This is a gradual process, and it’s essential to be patient. Here are some tips to help build that confidence:

Celebrate Small Wins

Every time your learner successfully completes a task, celebrate it! Whether it’s mastering parallel parking or navigating a roundabout, these small victories matter. A simple “Well done!” can boost their morale significantly.

Encourage Questions

Let your learner know that it’s okay to ask questions. Encourage them to voice any concerns or uncertainties they may have. This open communication can help them feel more comfortable and supported.

Practice Makes Perfect

The more time they spend behind the wheel, the more skilled they will become. Try to schedule regular practice sessions. Consistency is key in developing their driving abilities.

Need a Helping Hand? Join Us for a Lesson

If you’re feeling unsure about how to support your learner or just want to feel more confident during private practice, I offer a Parent Ride-Along Session.

You’ll join me and your learner for a professional driving lesson, so you can see first-hand how they’re being taught. It’s a relaxed, supportive session where you can ask questions, understand what your learner is working on, and pick up tips for helping them between lessons.

Parents always tell me how much more confident and connected they feel afterwards; it really makes a difference.

Understanding the Road Ahead

Driving is not just about controlling the vehicle; it’s also about understanding the road and its rules. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Road Signs and Signals

Make sure your learner is familiar with road signs and signals. Understanding these is crucial for safe driving. You can even turn it into a fun game by quizzing them on different signs during your practice sessions!

The Importance of Defensive Driving

Teach your learner about defensive driving. This means being aware of their surroundings and anticipating the actions of other drivers. Encourage them to always be prepared for the unexpected.

Weather Conditions

Driving in different weather conditions can be challenging. Make sure they practice in various situations, such as rain or fog, to build their skills and confidence.

Final Thoughts

Supervising a learner driver is a big responsibility, but you don’t have to do it alone. With the right guidance, a bit of patience (and maybe a cup of tea afterwards!), you can be a brilliant support system for your learner — and actually enjoy the journey together.
